Insomnia Gaming Festival (26th-29th August 2016)

What’s on?

This August bank holiday weekend will be the largest Insomnia event to date. We’re proud to announce the Cosplay zone area will be hosted by Costume and Play. Bringing you FOUR days of cosplay activities ranging from our sewing, props and fantastic demonstration areas. Costume and Play has three main goals to bring you the biggest cosplay experience we’ve put on to date. If you love video games, then head to Insomnia58 at the NEC Birmingham this summer! Visit the website.

  • To provide a masquerade tailored around performance and costuming that is flexible; giving you more opportunities to present your work to the judges at a time that fits around your personal schedule.
  • To allow anyone to interact with our fantastic zone area, with the ability to try costumes on and build cosplay pieces with us; anyone can now experience the joys of cosplay!
  • To provide a safe, community friendly space encompassing all aspects and elements of cosplay, for all ability levels from competition veterans to beginners.

We’re proud to announce we’ve achieved all three!

Giulietta is an English Cosplayer with a degree in Fine Art that is applied to the creation of her costumes. Most of her inspiration comes from video games and Japanese cartoons, however she also puts her own individual stamp on all her works, meaning that while Giulietta’s cosplays may not always be 100% accurate, they are all 100% original.

Despite only being on the cosplay scene for a little over a year, Giulietta has already established a prestigious name with incredible costumes and over 70,000 followers on Facebook.

She has participated in various exhibitions across the UK and Europe, as well as being involved in several not-for-profit events such as Comic Cons dedicated to people with disabilities and fundraisers for cancer research.

She was also recently a representative for the official release of the Warhammer 40k Eternal Crude Game in London, where she wore her Emperor of Mankind costume before companies such as Amazon and Tesco. She was also present for the official testing of the game, where professional gamers were flown in from across the globe.

Special Guest Judge

otherwise known as Begona F. Martin is an established artist who practices in illustration, sculpture and SFX makeup, and also a cosplayer known as ``Shirak`` with 15 years of experience. She has entered and won several international competitions, including LA based Cinema Makeup School - ``The next level of cosplay`` contest (finalist); and represented the UK at ECG (European Cosplay Gathering) in Paris in 2015, winning the ``Best Wig`` award.
She has merged her love for cosplay and the arts together, and she often works on several costume and makeup projects, including national ballet shows, Madam Tussauds figures, and UK celebrities amongst other projects.
Mainly self-taught in the SFX Makeup world, she has also been trained by Neill Gorton at Gorton's Studio.

Cosplayer down to the core, Silantre has been dedicated to making cosplays since 2005. She has proven her crafting skills with the creation of many different award winning costumes, ranging from armour to fursuits. She's a firm believer that anything drawn on paper can be made into a costume, whether it be from cardboard and duct tape or with the latest materials and gadgets!

Helen Alice Cosplay

Helen Alice Cosplay

Special Guest Judge

Helen Alice is a cosplayer of over 8 years and 40+ costumes. From those she’s built up a large range of skills and knowledge in every avenue of cosplay and can take on every challenge a costume could ever throw at her. Jokingly having the nickname “cosplay librarian” she’s always open to helping people learn how to craft, sharing what she knows, and happy to help everyone as much as she can, and if can’t passing them onto someone. Being a trained seamstress, sewing is her forte but is as capable of burning off her thumbprints as anyone else making armour. She also often designs her own costumes, and enjoys thinking outside the box when it comes to design and craft, also often designing her own fabrics and 3D parts for cosplay, and happy to help others do the same.
Helen often takes part in competitions, performing skits and winning a few. However, she prefers the backstage part of competitions to anything else, as meeting new cosplayers who are so into crafting is the best bit. Feel free to drop by her table at I58 to talk craft or get any help you may need.

Captain Amelia Cosplay

Captain Amelia Cosplay

Special Guest Judge

Amelia fell into cosplay by accident in 2012, and is now always on the look-out for more terrible TV to watch while embroidering. History graduate by day and real-life Disney princess always, she has been cosplaying and performing for five years, playing small acting roles in film and television alongside working with organisations including Warner Brothers, Sky, HBO and George R.R. Martin himself as part of the ‘Game of Thrones’ promotional spree.

In 2016 she rediscovered her love of the stage and returned to competitive cosplay; this year she has been one half of an MCM ‘Best in Show’ pair award, and won runner up at the recent LFCC ‘professional’ masquerade, amongst placing at other competitions. She is particularly dedicated to inspiring performance potential in masquerade competitors, so pop down to the performance panel at 12pm Saturday to pick up the tricks of the trade.

If performing is not so much your thing, but gaming cosplay definitely is, Amelia will be co-hosting the Costume & Play Sewing Table with her cosplay partner all weekend, and presenting her panel ‘Bringing Gaming Characters To Life’ on Sunday at 2pm. I58 marks the first time she’s actually worn a gaming costume to a gaming convention – Drop in and teach her a thing or two~~~'

Special Guest

Vocaloid cosplayer, Dancer and Entertainer Shelby has been performing for four years now and wishes to keep on performing as long as she can! Shelby will be cosplaying Hatsune Miku and Rin Kagamine on the Saturday and on the Sunday, for her interactive performances. 'I love how interested the crowd are and the response I'll get from them is amazing and getting them up on the stage to learn them some dance moves.'

She is extremely passionate about performing as Vocaloid because she feels completely connected to the characters and fell in love with their unique sound.
'I hope that more people will give a different type of music a chance, and that they would look into it and hopefully cosplay the characters and learn the dance routines too! I hope I can inspire people to go out there and do what they love.'

The Mask Madman

The Mask Madman

Special Guest Judge

My first dip into cosplay was in July 2014. I cosplayed a Zombie and gained experience with liquid latex and stage blood. I then started to make things, it started off with a mask which I made from
Plaster of Paris, I eventually started making props for cosplays, my first build being a flame thrower for a Warhammer 40K cosplay which I cosplayed at Winter Birmingham MCM 2014. I have made
many other props since then ranging from Gauntlets, Scythes, Guns, Axes and Swords. I am now looking into Armour as well.
